Ghana Army Captain Festus Yeboah Asuamah ('17) has arrived in Kumasi after completing a 250-kilometer cycling journey from Accra, marking the successful launch of the Ride for Safety and Fitness 2025.
The ride is dedicated to the memory of Akpene Adzo Ahadzie, a final-year KNUST architecture student who tragically lost her life in a cycling accident.
Captain Asuamah began the ride at 3:00 AM on April 5th from Burma Camp in Accra. Over the course of 13 to 15 hours, he pedalled through towns and communities, making planned stops for hydration and medical checks. The ride was supported by a dedicated medical and security team, ensuring safety throughout the challenging journey.
The initiative aims to raise national awareness about cyclist safety and promote sustainable transportation, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11.2, which calls for inclusive, safe, and accessible transport systems.
Akpene's final-year thesis, which envisioned cycling-friendly infrastructure in Ghanaian cities, served as a profound inspiration for the ride. Captain Asuamah hopes to use this moment to ignite a national conversation on integrating cycling into Ghana’s urban planning strategies.
The late student’s family, led by Prof. Divine Ahadzie fully supports the initiative and joined the concluding event at Luv FM premises.
